Spine Surgery Has Lots of Risks
According to a recent study, “major spinal surgery in the adult is associated with a high incidence of intra- and postoperative complications.” How often are there complications? The actual number may surprise you:
- 87% of patients had at least one documented complication.
- 39% of these were serious enough to extend their hospital stay.
- 73.5% experienced postoperative complications (wound complications, delerium, pneumonia, neuropathic pain, etc.).
- 10.5% experienced surgical complications.
- 1 ½% died.
All surgery has a serious risk of complications; many times these potential complications include death. Surgery should never be taken lightly and should be avoided if at all possible. Spend time with a doctor of chiropractic before you or a loved one consider spinal surgery. You will be glad you did.

Spinal fusion is surgery to fuse spine bones (vertebrae) that cause you to have back problems.Fusing means two bones are permanently placed together so there is no longer movement between them. Spinal fusion is usually done along with other surgical procedures of the spine. The surgeon will use a graft (such as bone) to hold (or fuse) the bones together permanently.
