Exercise for Brain Health
An interesting study looks at how exercise impacts brain health in seniors over 70. Specifically, the study looked at how a higher level of physical activity would impact brain atrophy (brain shrinkage) and white matter lesions (WML), which are dead cells in the brain that can cause a loss of memory, vision and cognitive function.
The researchers found that “physical activity was associated with less atrophy and WML.” This means exercise has a direct impact on the physical attributes of the brain, at least for seniors. While the study doesn’t address younger people, this may in fact also be true for everyone.
One more reason to make regular exercise a priority for your health, both physical and mental.
