Mediterranean Diet Succeeds
Want to know which type of diet helps you lose weight and keep it off? A study looked at how moderately obese participants fared in one of three weight-loss plans: “a low-fat, restricted-calorie diet; a Mediterranean, restricted-calorie diet; or a low-carbohydrate diet without calorie restriction.”
After two years, the average weight loss for each of the three diets was:
Low Fat Diet – 6.4 lbs.
Mediterranean Diet – 9.7 lbs.
Low-carbohydrate Diet – 10.4 lbs.
Four years later, each group grained back some of the weight. The average amount of weight lost after 6 years was:
Low Fat Diet – 1.3 lbs.
Mediterranean Diet – 6.8 lbs.
Low-carbohydrate Diet – 3.7 lbs.
Not only did those on the Mediterranean diet keep more weight off, they also enjoyed the other benefits of a Mediterranean diet which include a positive impact on cancer, weight loss, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, coronary heart disease and “neurodegenerative age-related diseases” (cognitive deficit, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease).
