April 17, 2014

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a proposed rule “that would require manufacturers to provide more substantial data to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of antibacterial soaps. The proposed rule covers only those consumer antibacterial soaps and body washes that are used with water.”

According to an FDA spokesperson, “antibacterial soap products contain chemical ingredients, such as triclosan and triclocarban, which may carry unnecessary risks given that their benefits are unproven.” These two chemicals are also regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as they are used in used in pesticides.

Given the concern expressed by the FDA, consumers will want to consider forgoing the use of these products until a further ruling is issued.
