Vitamin D for Dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea (also known as menstrual cramps) can be very severe for some women. Some studies have begun to draw an association between a lack of vitamin D and dysmenorrhea. A recent study of young women looked at this association and found “a high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency and secondary hyperparathyroidism (overactive parathyroid glands which produce too much parathyroid hormone) and/or low dietary calcium intake among adolescent and young adult females who experience severe and very severe dysmenorrhea may negatively affect bone metabolism during achievement of peak bone mass at a young age and adverse bone health at older age.”

If you are a woman experiencing severe dysmenorrhea , talk to your doctor of chiropractic to see if you are getting enough vitamin D and calcium.
