Limits of Low Back Pain Management

December 17, 2013

There is a belief among some people that their back pain can somehow be “self-managed” without seeking the care of a doctor of chiropractic or other musculoskeletal specialist. A study from Australia demonstrated that this just isn’t the case.

The researchers found that “self-management has small effects on pain and disability in people with LBP (low back pain). These results challenge the endorsement of self-management in treatment guidelines.” So while some health care providers that are less familiar with back pain may try to suggest that a person can manage their own back pain, the research just don’t support that notion.

If you have back pain, even if it seems minor and tends to come and go, your best choice is to see your doctor of chiropractic as soon as it flares up. Not only will you have the pain addressed, but they can focus on the primary cause which could ultimately be much more serious than you realize.

Thank you Donald for the interesting article. I have had lower back pain for years until I went to my chiropractor. I have been doing all of the self treatment you have discussed. My husband yelled at me to go. Being stubborn I resisted until one day I couldn’t even walk. My chiropractor is great, she really understood me. My back is not 100%, but I’ll take 90% any day.
