MUA for Serious Back Pain

August 5, 2014

Manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) is an outpatient procedure for patients with severe chronic back pain. The area of the spine is anesthetized and a doctor of chiropractic provides careful manipulation to the distressed area without muscles constrictions. The procedure is repeated 2-4 times over 7-10 days.

A study of MUA found that “sixteen of 18 patients experienced a clinically meaningful improvement in ODI (pain disability) score. No adverse reactions were reported.” The authors concluded that “MUA showed clinically meaningful reduction in low back pain disability.”

MUA is an option for severe back pain, particularly for patients who are considering surgery. Patient should consult with a doctor of chiropractic to determine if MUA should be considered.

Third party payers for the most part avoid paying for this procedure. Now with ObabmaCare? lol

I was formerly certified to do Manipulation under anesthesia and the first to bring it to Puerto Rico however became very disillusioned when we realized that insurance would not pay for it and took a blood bath when the denials came in the method is great but very few people can afford it

The MUA is definitely a good option for those that want to stay conservative with their treatment and avoid surgery. You are under anesthesia, which is unsettling for some patients, but as a treatment option that does not involve a scalpel and power tools (it is not surgery!), this may be something to consider. Sometimes a manipulation may be difficult to tolerate and too painful if you are awake for it. I would certainly tell my patients that this is an option for them!
