Chiropractic for Chiari Malformations

Chiari malformations are a birth defect where part of the brain extends into the spinal canal. People who have this typically experience headaches, dizziness, vision problems, muscle weakness and other issues.

A case study of a 34-year-old woman diagnosed with Arnold-Chiari malformation looked at the potential effectiveness of “conservative care for her symptoms.” She has a “history of headaches, dizziness, photophobia, and temporary loss of vision aggravated by postural positions while bending forward.”

The woman “was treated using cervical chiropractic manipulation using diversified technique. The dizziness and headache were resolved after 3 visits. At her 3-month follow-up, she continued to be symptom-free.”

  1. #4.) Herniation size does not matter in regards to Chiari, it’s the CSF flow. A noticeable trend is that herniation size is actually longer than what is shown on the MRI – e.g. 5mm was 7mm, 3mm was 5mm, so a 1mm could be 3mm, which meets the minimum. Even with a small herniation, it may actually be more dangerous than a longer one if fluid is pressurized from the blockage.
